15 gutter & downpipe terms explained

Fascia bracket
The clip screwed to the fascia board that holds the gutter channel and sets its gentle slope towards the downpipe.
Union bracket (joiner)
The clip with internal rubber seals that joins two lengths of gutter together while allowing slight expansion and contraction.
Running outlet
The gutter fitting with a hole in the base that funnels water from the horizontal gutter into the top of the downpipe.
Stop end
The cap clipped onto the closed end of a gutter run (external stop end) or inside a fitting (internal stop end) to hold water in.
Swan-neck (offset bend)
Two 112.5-degree or 92.5-degree bends joined by a short pipe that brings the downpipe back from the overhanging eaves to the house wall.
Downpipe shoe
The angled fitting at the bottom of a rainwater downpipe that directs water neatly into the ground gulley grate.
Gulley trap
The ground-level drain basin with a removable grate and water seal that receives rainwater from the downpipe.
Gutter fall (gradient)
The slight downward slope along the fascia (typically 1 in 350 to 1 in 600) so rainwater runs cleanly to the outlet instead of ponding.
Eaves support tray (felt tray)
A rigid plastic tray slid under the bottom course of roof tiles so rainwater drops into the centre of the gutter even if the old underlay felt has rotted.
Half-round gutter (112 mm)
The standard semicircular domestic gutter profile fitted on many Irish semi-detached and terraced homes.
Deepflow / high-capacity gutter
A deeper semi-elliptical gutter profile that carries roughly twice the flow of standard half-round on steep or large roofs.
Ogee (K-style) gutter
A decorative moulded front-profile gutter with high water capacity, common on detached houses and conservatory roofs.
Continuous aluminium gutter
Roll-formed aluminium guttering extruded on site to the exact roof length so there are no mid-run joints to leak.
Hedgehog / mesh gutter guard
A cylindrical bristle brush or clip-in mesh fitted along the gutter to stop autumn leaves blocking the running outlet.
SkyVac / high-reach gutter vacuum
A commercial wet-and-dry vacuum with lightweight carbon-fibre poles and a wireless camera used to clear gutters from ground level.
